  15. How do the date, parties, judges, and counsel restrictions work? Do I need to enter other search terms as well?
  16. Documents have a structure that is common to all documents of that type. In LexisNexis® Case Law, this structure is called segments, which are the natural parts or divisions of the document. For example, cases contain name, date, judge, and counsel segments, among others.
You can restrict your search to a specific part or segment of a document, such as the court that heard the case or the judge who wrote the opinion. Segment searching is especially useful when you are looking for:

    • Opinions written by a particular judge
    • Cases involving a particular party
    • Cases in which a particular attorney or firm appeared as counsel
    • Cases decided on, before, or after a particular date
